Most Frequently Asked Questions

Where does ‘Coffee Plus 254’ come from?

Coffee Plus 254 is a nod to Kenya’s country code, +254.

We are focused on showcasing coffee from farmers in Kenya so much that we worked this into our brand name.

What’s the vision for Coffee Plus 254?

We want to showcase Kenyan coffee, appreciating the range of taste, regions and the producers of the coffee.

We also want to work with more smallholder farmers produce ~70% of Kenya’s coffee on farms as small as a tennis court. Yet, their coffees continue to put Kenya high on the list of high-quality, delicious coffee.

For the long-term development of Kenya's coffee industry, we see youth involvement as key. Kenya’s coffee farmers are aging out of the industry. The average age of a farmer is well above 40. We want to support young individuals keen on joining the coffee industry, from nurturing coffee seedlings, to baristas, to running their own brands.

We're working on it. Step-by-step, or as we say back home, hatua-kwa-hatua. We started by investing in youth programs like scholarships in barista schools. With time, we'll double-down across the value chain, including training on coffee farming.

We are a youth collective focused on Kenyan coffee, fair pay and youth employment in coffee. The Plus 254 is from our country code. Learn more about our mission and vision.

We provide local pickup options for freshly roasted beans at our roasting facility in Waltham, Massachusetts. Customers can select "Local Pickup" at checkout to skip shipping costs.

Where can I attend a Kenyan coffee tasting in Boston or Cambridge?

Coffee Plus 254 hosts guided "Taste the 254" coffee tasting experiences at locations like First Street Market in Cambridge. These 90-minute sessions provide an intimate flight of Kenyan coffees, brewing tips, and deep dives into Kenyan coffee farmers/farming, and culture for local enthusiasts.

Coffee Tasting vs. Cupping: What's the difference?

Cupping is a standardized method professionals use to evaluate coffee quality.
Coffee tasting is a broader, more relaxed way to explore coffee. We focus on the flavors, the growing and processing of coffee, and tastes of different beans, or brewing methods.

Can I book a private coffee tasting event for a group or office?

Coffee Plus 254 offers private, guided Kenyan coffee tastings for corporate teams and private groups in the Greater Boston area. These sessions are customizable and include a flight of specialty coffees, educational storytelling about the Kenyan value chain, and hands-on brewing demonstrations.

What is the difference between Kenya AA and AB coffee grades?

Kenyan coffee grades, like AA and AB, refer primarily to bean size, not exclusively quality. AA beans are the largest (screen size 17/18), while AB beans are slightly smaller (screen size 15/16). While AA is often associated with premium lots, both grades can offer exceptional flavor profiles depending on the specific estate and processing.

What is peaberry coffee?

Peaberry coffee is a natural coffee bean mutation where only one seed develops inside the coffee cherry instead of two. This gives the bean a small, round shape unlike the flat, paired halves of regular coffee beans. It's rare as only 5-10% of harvested coffee are peaberries.

How do you recommend brewing your coffees?

In general, we roast our coffee from light to medium and recommend pourover, cold brew, Aeropress and other drip methods. See our blog for some brewing guides.
